The International Society for Sports Nutrition listed basketball in a 2017 position paper as a sport and discipline for which the performance-enhancing effects of creatine are considered proven. However, the potential for performance enhancement through creatine in basketball has been established long before this, as the higher the strength, power, or interval components of a sport's demands, the greater the performance improvement from creatine. Regular creatine supplementation leads to improved jumping ability. This has been demonstrated in various tests such as vertical jumps (briefly squatting and then jumping as high as possible), counter movement jumps (jumps where a quick knee bend is permitted for the wind-up), spike jumps (jumps with one arm extended, as if about to spike in volleyball), and block jumps (jumps with both arms raised).
American studies have shown that creatine supplementation is widespread in team sports such as soccer, tennis, hockey, and basketball. Of the athletes surveyed, 21 percent reported taking creatine. Regarding the prevalence of creatine as a dietary supplement, it can be stated that the higher the proportion of strength, sprinting, jumping, and interval training in a sport, the more athletes use creatine. More recently, further health-promoting properties of creatine, as well as its positive effects on energy metabolism in a variety of different cells in the human body (e.g., muscle cells, brain cells, immune cells), are increasingly being scientifically proven.
The women's basketball team of TSV 1880 Wasserburg a. Inn e.V. is also aware of this, and so it made sense to address the topic of creatine and basketball together in a promotional video. After all, the women's team is an absolute flagship of the club and of German basketball. Having been promoted to the first division (1. DBBL) in 2001 and now, after more than 20 years in the 1. Bundesliga, always among the top 4 places, 11 times German champion, 9 times cup winner, the women's basketball team of TSV 1880 Wasserburg a. Inn e.V. are among the best in Germany and Europe.
